About the Artist

Stass Shpanin

Stass Shpanin (*1990) is an American visual artist whose work is focused on interpretations and fabrications of the past. His work ranges from monumental paintings showcasing European and American history to total installations commenting on institutional critique and museum practices.

Shpanin completed his MFA in painting from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. In 2012, he received a Fulbright Fellowship award to Russia, organized by the US State Department. Shpanin’s artworks have been shown internationally, and venues include Smack Mellon Gallery in New York, Gridchinhall Gallery in Moscow, Five Points Gallery in Torrington, CT, and Temple Contemporary in Philadelphia, and ToBE Gallery in Bern, Switzerland, among others. In 2021 and 2022, he participated in artists residencies at Residency.CH in Bern, Switzerland and ScaleABLE AIR in Scalea, Italy.

Shpanin’s art studio is based in Philadelphia, and he is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Art at Rutgers University, New Jersey.
