The contemporary art scene in St. Petersburg today is in many senses a legacy of the various art groups and collectives that established in the vanguard subcultural circles. Despite the fact that the artists today are not (yet?) being persecuted or strictly censored, two thirds of their life has been passed under the "hybrid regime" balancing on the scale between democracy and authoritarianism.
The exhibited works reflect the reality, that the artists dealing with on daily basis. Each artist has his or her own expressive language, that is reflected in the variety of materials one uses, from embroidery on satin velvet to chopped with axe wood, metal and nails.
The group exhibition “TWO THIRDS. COPING WITH REALITY” presents a selection of established and emerging contemporary Russian artists, living and working in St. Petersburg. The members of two most prominent contemporary art collectives such as “PARAZIT” and “SEVER-7” are part of the exhibition.
The presented artists NADYA KOSINSKAYA, NESTOR ENGELKE, YURI SHTAPAKOV, IVAN TUZOV, SEMYON MOTOLYANETS, DMITRIY ZHERAVOV, LADA UCHAEVA, ASYA MARAKULINA are part of the state museum collections and appreciated by private collectors as in Russia, so abroad.
