Initiated a twinning partnership about four decades ago, Zurich and Kunming enjoy a collaboration that is constantly being renewed. Also, artists from both cities have frequent communication. A representative example would be the collaboration between a Zurich-based artist Katharina Rähmi and a Kunming-based artist Gao Xiang.
The upcoming exhibition ELEVATED presents Katharina Rähmi’s deep understanding of nature and both West and non-West art, such as her
Rice series. With installations, paintings, ceramics, and video, she fans out the cosmos of something as simple as a grain of rice. Rice inspires her with its growth cycles, its dimensions, and its essence to transform all this into art. Installations with rice or grains of rice, painted with white or black ink, on Chinese Shenchuan paper and canvas are visions of this spiritual nourishment.
Gao Xiang also explores the numerous possibilities of graphic expression in detail, but he does not describe his subjects in a realistic way. The isolated motifs against an open background and the reduced use of colour make them particularly striking. The focus here is on an inner, dreamlike world, which not least contains personal symbolism. His works radiate the magic of the inauthentic, the intangible, like his
Dreams series.
